This is a visit report from Yamagata, where the author met Tomoaki Sato, president of Marujyu, a soy sauce and miso maker founded in 1844. According to Sato, the company’s ancestors started as a benihana (safflower) merchant, then set up a brewery in the mid-Meiji era (1869–1911) to make miso before adding soy sauce. He said the company planned to market its halal soy sauce to Muslim markets such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
These are the company’s own statements, reported by the author. Check the company’s current product and certification details before relying on them.
