A news report said that prayer rooms, hijabs made from local silk and halal-certified whale meat were appearing in Japan as tourism bodies responded to demand from Muslim travellers. The report described Japan as having around 100,000 practising Muslims at the time. Current figures differ; see nippon.com for a 2024 estimate of about 350,000 Muslims.
